You will be aware of the much publicized so called LoveBug virus which brought many mail servers and companies grinding to a halt in May 2000. You will also be aware that this was not an isolated incident and that its just a question of time until another major event occurs.
Recent reports suggest that LoveBug affected 45 million e-mail users worldwide and cost an estimated $10.1 billion.
But there are many other ways in which your business could be affected by the use and transmission of e-mail, possible solutions might include:
- Browser based management of configuration, quarantine areas and reports by domain and administrator
- Virus detection and cleaning with sophisticated notification process
- Spam blocking via rules and actions
- Attach legal disclaimers to out-bound e-mail
- Scan for offensive material to reduce legal liability
- Block specific file types (images, executables, videos)
- Block large attachments based upon file type
- Web based reporting that is interactive or scheduled for regular e-mail delivery
- Separate quarantine areas for different threats
Some responsible companies have taken a pro-active approach to combating potential virus attacks by installing anti-virus software and strategies at the desktop or gateway, others have added disclaimers to their outgoing e-mail, but is it enough and are you really protected? Unfortunately the real answer is, probably, NO!
At Airtime we are always looking for ways to offer our clients the latest solutions to aid their business communications needs and to help protect vital resources. We can offer solutions to this ever increasing problem.
To help us assess the level of perceived threat and potential requirement for virus scanning services it would assist us greatly if you would take just a few moments to answer the questionnaire here where you will also find detailed information about the benefits of Content Security Solutions.
Summary of Key Points and FAQs
VIRUS SCANNING
Virus scanning is centrally managed and hosted. E-mails are pro-actively scanned before reaching your machines.
It provides peace of mind, there is no large infrastructure investment needed: no additional hardware, software or management of time you focus on your core business.
Ability to determine your own policy regarding acceptable addresses from which you will accept or reject e-mail and attachments such as jpgs, bmps etc.
Q. We already have an anti-virus solution why would we need more?
A. Virus scanning at the Internet level should be seen as an additional layer of defence that supports what you already have in place. Although desktop anti-virus products are an essential part of any anti-virus policy, its difficult to ensure that the virus signature files are maintained especially where mobile users are concerned. With the huge increase in Internet and e-mail use, intercepting viruses closer to the source is logical and will add a new layer of defence and protection.
Q. How much would a computer virus cost my company?
A. The key cost is in lost productivity but there is also the time your IT staff spend disinfecting all your machines and the cost of lost files and data. Additionally there may be a need to shut down all external e-mail until the problem is resolved essentially cutting off a business-critical communication tool.
CONTENT SECURITY
Q. If we have a Virus Scanning solution in place why do we need to worry about Content Security?
A. Were sure you are aware that simple anti-virus checking doesnt cover the whole issue. Content Security spans e-mail attachments, spam, hoaxes, bandwidth sapping unauthorized attachments of video, image and commercially sensitive material as well as misuse of e-mail exposing users to legal liability. E-mail can be recursively decomposed into its base form and then recognize file signatures, which means that threats can be found which are buried many levels deep in zip files or compound documents.
